Al is my first son. Before he was born, I’ve committed to myself that I want to experience the joy of breastfeeding. Thanks God, I’ve been blessed with enough breast milk so that in the early hours after Al’s birth, I can directly breastfeeding him. All that I can say is that, breastfeeding is special for some reasons.
The first reason why breastfeeding is special is that it “connects” mom to her baby. I always enjoy the breastfeeding time. I feel that it’s the most romantic time between me and my son therefore I don’t like anyone interrupting it. Second, by breastfeeding our children, we save a lot of money. Imagine if we have to spend money to buy formula, how much money do we need? Yes, a lot. If a can of formula costs 250.000 rupiahs, while a baby needs approximately a can/week, we need more or less a million in a month to buy formula. Third, breastfeeding is better for the development of our babies. Many researches have proved the power of breast milk (compared to formula). Three months of breastfeeding could improve a baby’s development.
Knowing the benefits of breastfeeding, I’m trying to provide Al my breast milk even when I’m working in my office. During my working hours, I spend 2 x 30 minutes everyday to pump my breast milk. This activity starts when Al was 2 months old and I had to start work in my office. At that time, I had pumped 80-90 bottles of breast milk and all of them are “sold out” when Al is 5 months and 3 weeks. Starting at that age, I tried to pump everyday and night during my sleeping time. I woke up every 2 hours to breastfeed him and pumped for the following day. It lasts till now. Today, my “savings” are up to 20 bottles for Al’s need. I hope that I can give him breast milk until he is 2 years old.
After all, I cannot judge that formula is either bad or good for babies as some mothers cannot breastfeed their babies for some reasons. What I want to emphasize here is that whatever you choose, you have to know the risks and and the benefits from that choice.
